Fujitsu unveils the DNA of sustainability leaders
Tokyo, June 29, 2023 - Fujitsu, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, has released the results of a significant global survey, the Fujitsu Future Insights Global Sustainability Transformation Survey Report 2023.
The survey involved 1,800 executives and key decision-makers across nine countries, exploring the status of sustainability transformation and its intersection with digital transformation in various industries.
Shifting towards sustainable business practices
Environmental and social sustainability challenges, like climate change and geopolitical tensions, are intertwined and influence business operations. This has underscored the urgency for organizations to act. Fujitsu's study intended to elucidate the state and key drivers of successful sustainability transformation.
The survey found only 8% of organizations qualify as sustainability leaders, who are actively developing capacity, strategies, and outcomes towards sustainability.
Despite many business leaders acknowledging the importance of delivering value to the environment and society, the complexity of such transformation makes it challenging to accomplish. The survey reveals many organizations are just embarking on their sustainability journey.
Unveiling the four pillars of success
Fujitsu's study identified four crucial success factors common among sustainability leaders:
Driving leadership based on a sustainability-oriented purpose
Fostering empathy with customers and employees, for example through skills development and promoting diversity and inclusion
Integrating sustainability into business operations
Implementing a dual approach of digital and sustainability transformation
Notably, 89% of sustainability leaders manage their businesses based on their purpose, compared to only 45% of non-leaders.
Digital transformation: The vehicle for sustainability
Sustainability leaders are found to be proactive in driving digital transformation and have strong organizational capabilities in digital technology. Among these leaders, 84% possess employees with necessary digital transformation skills, and 79% utilize agile development methodologies.
Furthermore, 78% are transforming their business processes using data and digital technologies.
Around 80% of sustainability leaders believe in the importance of automation, experience, innovation, resilience, and trust in digital-led sustainability transformation.
The survey also sheds light on the increasing integration of AI in business operations. For instance, approximately two thirds of respondents already implement AI to automate tasks and enhance employee productivity, while 42% anticipate that more than half of all business tasks will involve collaboration between humans and AI by 2030.
